Only a few pieces of bamboo carving works have been handed down from the early stage, and mostly are from the Ming and Qing dynasties with primitive styles, plump patterns all over the utensil body, deep cut craftwork in deep embossment or openwork which was expressed by powerful lines and distinguished outline. The works was dominated by brush pot and incense pot. The style from the Ming Dynasty still remained in the works in the early Qing Dynasty and was expressed in various techniques including light carving, light embossment, Liuqing and alto-relievo etc. which were used simultaneously; types were increased by arm-rest, bamboo shoot character, animal and mountain rocks besides brush pot and incense pot. All works was delicate and regular in the craftwork and elegant, artistic in patterns, like the Liuqing pavilions with landscape pattern carved by Zhang Xihuang and small Chinese characters in cursive hand handwriting and regular script carved by Deng Wei were the representatives with distinguished individual style.
The pattern on bamboo carving in the late Qing Dynasty was rather dull and was mostly lightly cut in intaglio. Small photo copy, sealed inscriptions and poems in closely ranged small Chinese characters were popular, and sculptors were particularly good at reproducing patterns from the Chinese calligraphy and painting. The frequent utensils were fan bone and arm-rest etc., and there were also large size bamboo shoot carving works with subjects as A group immortals' celebrating birthday, and Three sheep's in peace etc. and in rough craftwork.
Bamboo carving in the Ming Dynasty was mostly attached with the author's name or seal which is an important proof to distinguish. Therefore, fake seals esp. those famous expert's seals are rather frequent. Generally speaking, the genuine works is in natural and smooth style, elegant and strong, rigid and flexible and is distinguished with the author's own style. While fake works is poor and dull in the pattern, weak in carving and adverse to the original style of the author, though some copied works is rather similar in the appearance, it is lack of nimbus.
